First deployed in 2005, Boeing initially developed, integrated, tested and fielded SBX to support the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) program. This vital radar is noted to be so powerful that it can detect an object the size of a baseball—3,000 miles away.  

When used as part of the GMD program , also designed and industry-led by Boeing, SBX is one of more than 180 uniquely configured and operational assets, stretching across 15 time zones to detect and track high velocity ballistic missile threats. The SBX capability is executed with speed, precision and accuracy in a real time environment. It is designed to allow it to “ballast down,” submerging much of its height under water to maintain stability for its operational capability in virtually all sea states.  

This maneuverability has enabled SBX to be deployed 13 times since 2006, participating in 11 individual flight tests and six ground tests.  

Today, SBX supports several elements for the Ballistic Missile Defense System of the U.S. Missile Defense Agency. Warfighters defending the U.S. homeland count on it, especially during periods of elevated threat. The SBX system is kept up to date with a modernization program to ensure the critical asset is always ready.
