At her weekly news conference Thursday afternoon, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi praised the six Democrats she appointed to serve on the new subcommittee to investigate Planned Parenthood.  

In criticizing the panel’s creation, she renamed it, “The Republican Select Committee to Attack Women’s Health.” “It’s a funny thing,” the California Democrat said. “We’ll see what their agenda is, but I do believe that hardworking families deserve better than wasting taxpayers’ money on select committees that diminish women’s health possibilities.”  

Pelosi appointed Rep. Jan Schakowsky of Illinois as the ranking member on the investigative subcommittee. The additional Democratic members are Reps. Diana DeGette of Colorado, Jerrold Nadler of New York, Jackie Speier of California, Suzan DelBene of Washington and Bonnie Watson Coleman of New Jersey.  

Democrats considered boycotting the panel, which is investigating whether Planned Parenthood, a women’s health organization that also provides abortion services, illegally sold fetal tissue.  

This is the second special committee Republicans have created in the last two years to probe a controversy. The other panel is investigating the 2012 attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.
