DC Vote announced on Thursday that Vinoda Basnayake will serve as the organization’s new chairman of its board of directors.

Basnayake is of counsel at Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP’s Washington, D.C. office, a post he has held since June 2014. He works with foreign governments and international corporations in legislative and policy areas.

DC Vote is an engagement and advocacy organization for voting rights and statehood in the nation’s capital. The group lobbies Congress to promote support for D.C. and democracy among its voters.

In 2016, DC Vote plans to “hold members of Congress accountable when they attempt to block local DC laws,” according to a press release.

Basnayake has also worked at Patton Boggs, LLP as a special advisor and at the World Bank as a financial consultant.

The D.C. native graduated from Georgetown University in 2003 and graduated Wharton School of Business and the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 2008.
