Rep. Bill Posey, R-Fla., will go unopposed in the general election after his Democratic opponent announced he will instead run for the state Senate.  

Christopher Duncan, who challenged  Posey in 2012 as a write-in candidate and is legally blind after losing his sight to glaucoma, said he would choose to run for the Senate’s 17th district seat.  

“Although this is a local race for an elected office, the issues are very similar to the congressional race,” Duncan said in a statement. “And the campaign will be focusing on the core issues that families are facing, not only in South Brevard and Indian River County, but across the entire state.”  

Posey was elected to the seat in 2008. The Florida 8th Congressional District encompasses all of Indian River and Brevard counties, called the “Space Coast” because of the NASA facilities in the area, is rated Safe Republican by Rothenberg & Gonzales Political Report /Roll Call.  

Posey is a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus and the Republican Study Committee and he votes with his party 92.8 percent of the time.
