Democrats have recruited businessman Jay Sidie to challenge Kansas Republican Rep. Kevin Yoder in November.   

Democrats need to win 30 seats to win a majority in the House. But as Nathan Gonzales of the Rothenberg & Gonzales Political Report has outlined , for the party to take full advantage of Donald Trump at the top of the ticket, Democrats needs to target seats where the GOP holds the advantage.  

Kansas’ 3rd District is a safe Republican seat, but it’s one of those suburban, well-educated districts where Democrats think they have a chance. Dennis Moore, a Democrat, represented the district for six terms from 1999 until retiring in 2011. And now that they at least have a candidate, flipping the seat looks more feasible.  

“There’s no question that defeating a career politician will be difficult, but there’s a groundswell of Democrats, independents, and Republicans that want to bring an end to the devastating Yoder-Brownback agenda,” Sidie said in a statement announcing his candidacy Thursday.  

Tying Yoder, a three-term incumbent, to the unpopular education and budget cuts supported by GOP Gov. Sam Brownback will be a big part of the Democrats’ messaging here.  

“I am confident that we will have the resources and organization to win in November,” Sidie said. National Democrats are excited about his ability to fundraise for the race.  

Yoder ended the first quarter in March with $2.4 million in his campaign coffers.   

The 3rd District is still tough ground for Democrats. Mitt Romney carried it by 10 points in 2012 though Arizona Sen. John McCain only carried it by 1 point in 2008.   

Democrats have been trying to expand their playing field across the country, and last month landed a recruit in a Safe Republican seat in Colorado . Democratic state Sen. Gail Schwartz is challenging three-term Rep. Scott Tipton in the state’s 3rd District.
