With the future of his campaign up in the air, Bernie Sanders has reportedly dropped an idea that he might skydive into a California rally. The internet was awash with speculation Friday about a barnstorming Bernie after a California newspaper reported that Sanders was considering the suggestion and had approached a local skydiving instructor.  

But the campaign quickly shot that down on Friday.  

“No, the senator will not be skydiving into the rally today,” Symone Sanders, a campaign spokeswoman not related to the candidate, told The Atlantic  on Friday.

According to The (Santa Rosa) Press Democrat , the Sanders campaign told a skydiving instructor earlier in the week to expect a call from the 74-year-old senator, who had been given the option of parachuting into the rally site at the municipal airport in Cloverdale, California.  

“If he feels like going skydiving, I will personally take him,” Jimmy Halliday, president and jumpmaster at NorCal Skydiving, told the newspaper.  

The Sanders campaign did not return the newspaper’s request for comment. But Halliday told the paper that Sanders’ staffer approached him with the idea Wednesday, and he later did a tandem jump with a member of the campaign team.

Michael Morrissey, the Cloverdale airport manager, fueled the speculation in an interview with the paper.  

“He’s supposed to make a grand entrance,” Morrissey reportedly said, but declined to say how grand.  

But Cloverdale Mayor Mary Ann Brigham dismissed the parachute possibility as a rumor. “If he did it, I would be surprised,” she told the paper.
