Days before North Carolina’s congressional primaries, Donald Trump endorsed GOP Rep. Renee Ellmers in a robocall set to go out to district residents on Monday.   

This is the first time the presumptive GOP nominee has endorsed a congressional candidate.  

Ellmers is in the political fight of her life in a primary against fellow GOP Rep. George Holding . Court-mandated redistricting moved Holding’s 13th district across the state, so he decided to run for the newly redrawn 2nd District instead. He lives in the nearby 4th District.

Ellmers told Roll Call  in early March that Ohio Gov. John Kasich was her pick in the presidential race. Several weeks later, however, she became the first GOP congresswoman to endorse Trump .   

“Renee was the first congresswoman to endorse me, and she really was terrific, and boy is she a fighter,” Trump says in the recording.   

“I need her help in Washington so we can defeat ISIS, secure our border and bring back jobs, and frankly, so many other things. And Renee knows how to do it. She gets it,” Trump says.   

Ellmers has been mentioned as a possible vice presidential pick for Trump.
