A woman who gathered signatures for Republican Jon Keyser’s Senate campaign in Colorado was arrested  Wednesday on 34 felony forgery charges.

Maureen Marie Moss is charged with turning in at least 34 fraudulent signatures to her employer, Black Diamond Outreach, which collected signed petitions for Keyser’s campaign.

A Denver TV station  found the forged signatures in early May after Keyser successfully challenged a state ruling that he hadn’t gathered the necessary signatures to get on the June 28 primary ballot. The initial ruling was not related to the forgery case.

Keyser, a former state representative, was ready to move on.

The charges were the latest in bad headlines for Republicans who at one time thought they could unseat Colorado’s senior senator, Democrat Michael Bennet, this year especially after Republican Cory Gardner beat Democratic incumbent  Mark Udall has madein 2014. But disarray among Republicans in fielding a candidate makes that less likely.

There is currently no clear front runner in the Republican field and many top Republicans passed on running.
