Speaker Paul D. Ryan said Tuesday he will hold a charity event at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland “with some friends of mine in Ohio who have been fighting poverty.”  

In addition to charitable events, the Wisconsin Republican said at a news conference Tuesday that he will spend time at the convention with delegations coming in from around the country.   

As speaker, Ryan is designated to serve as chairman of the convention. To prepare for that role, Ryan said he’s gone through procedures for opening and closing the convention with the RNC parliamentarian.  

“I’ve been basically preparing on rules tactics, which is how the gavel works and how you open up the floor,” he said.   

Ryan is also slated to speak in Cleveland  — possibly next Tuesday night, he said — but he hasn’t started writing his speech yet.   

Asked about the possibility that Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, will select Indiana governor and former congressman Mike Pence as his running mate, Ryan said, “I’m just as anxious as you are about who the VP pick is. I’m familiar with this process. I have the highest regard for Mike. He’s a personal friend.”
