A new poll shows Republican Sen. Rob Portman has expanded his lead against former Gov. Ted Strickland in the Ohio Senate race.

The Bloomberg Politics poll released Wednesday found that 53 percent of likely voters would vote for Portman if the election were held today while 36 percent would back Strickland.

The race had polled closely earlier this year, but Portman has increased his lead over the summer. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and the Senate Majority PAC delayed ad buys for Strickland as his campaign lagged in recent months.

The Rothenberg & Gonzales Political Report/Roll Call recently updated the race rating to Leans Republican.

The Bloomberg poll also showed that Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has a five-point lead against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, 48 percent to 43 percent.

The poll surveyed 802 likely Ohio voters from Sept. 9 to Sept. 12 by landline telephone and cellphone and had a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.
