Poll: Katko Holds Sizable Lead Over Democratic Challenger
Incumbent Republican up big in New York district won easily by Obama

New York Rep. John Katko holds a significant lead over his Democratic opponent and is actually outperforming Hillary Clinton in his upstate House race, according to a new poll.
The Time Warner Cable News/Siena College poll found Katko with a 19-point lead over Democrat Colleen Deacon, 53 percent to 34 percent. Furthermore, the freshman congressman draws support from 28 percent of Democrats in the district, while only 13 percent of the district’s Republicans back Deacon.
In the presidential race, Clinton leads Republican Donald Trump by 12 points among district voters, 45 percent to 33 percent, the poll shows. But that’s still 4 points less than President Barack Obama’s margin of victory in 2012. Obama also won the district under its current boundaries by 14 points in 2008.

Voters polled also support a number of Democratic issues, with 74 percent calling climate change a real threat and 66 percent saying they support a path to citizenship for immigrants in the U.S. illegally.
But those polled also only narrowly support keeping the 2010 heath care law, and 54 percent consider themselves supporters of the Second Amendment rather than supporters of gun control.
The poll surveyed 655 likely voters by telephone from Sept. 22-29. The margin of error was 4.8 percentage points.
