Report: Rick Perry Top Pick for Energy Secretary
That’s the department he famously forgot in debate as one he would eliminate
Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry is President-elect Donald Trump’s top pick to lead the Department of Energy, according to reports.
Perry is among four people being considered for the post, including former Texas Republican Party Chairman Ray Washburne and Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin III of West Virginia and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Bloomberg reported.
Perry’s selection would be somewhat ironic since during his first failed run for president in 2011, Perry attempted to list three federal departments he would eliminate. He remembered the departments of Commerce and Education, but blanked on the third — the Department of Energy — which led to his much-maligned “Oops” moment.
Perry had jumped into the 2012 campaign for the GOP nomination and near the top of the polls, but the gaffe doomed sent him to near the bottom.
Perry was an early and outspoken critic of Trump this time around, calling him a “cancer” on conservatism, before dropping out before the primaries and became a supporter after Trump had secured the nomination, speaking in his support at the 2016 Republican National Convention.
