This Black History Month, the Congressional Black Associates will honor five people for their contributions to the community in their annual Trailblazer Awards ceremony.

This year’s awardees are Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, D-Md., and Senate Chaplain Barry C. Black, and Hill veterans Michael McQuerry, Jaqueline Ellis (posthumously) and Jennifer DeCasper.

The awards are named for African-Americans who had an impact on government, including Joseph H. Rainey, the first African-American in the House, Christine R. Davis, the first African-American staff director of a congressional committee, and Ronald V. Dellums, the first African-American to sit on the House Armed Services Committee.

The ceremony is in the Capitol Visitor Center auditorium at 6 p.m.

The National Press Foundation’s annual awards dinner is at the Marriott Marquis (901 Massachusetts Ave. NW) at 7:30 p.m.

The D.C. mayor’s office and the district’s Commission on the Arts and Humanities celebrates Black History Month at the Lincoln Theater (1215 U St. NW), starting at 6:30 p.m., with a panel on the district’s African Disapora and a performance of “The Women of Plums.” Admission is free.

Astronaut comes to the Hill

Former astronaut and senator, Harrison Schmitt, R-N.M., will testify before the House Science, Space and Technology Committee at 10 a.m. in 2318 Rayburn. Schmitt was on the Apollo 17 mission and served a term in the Senate from 1977 to 1983.

Fun facts about Black

The House Budget Committee on Wednesday released a list entitled “10 Things to Know About Diane Black,” its new chairwoman. The list includes blurbs about the Tennessee Republican and photographs of her family, her fishing catch, and from her early years in high school and as a nurse.
