Former Louisiana Republican Rep. John Fleming is joining the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Fleming, who is a physician, accepted the job as deputy assistant secretary for health technology, NOLA.com reported.

The selection comes after Fleming gave up his seat to run for the Senate to replace Sen. David Vitter. Fleming finished fifth in the Senate primary and former state Treasurer John Kennedy won the seat in the runoff.

Fleming said he reached out HHS Secretary Tom Price, who President Donald Trump plucked from the House, about joining the administration. Price, like Fleming, is a physician and the two worked together in Congress.

Fleming, who served four terms in the House, was one of the more conservative members of the House and was a member of the House Freedom Caucus. The position he’s taking does not require Senate confirmation.

To take the job, Fleming will have to sell his family practice in Minden.

The Louisiana Republican told NOLA.com he was not ruling out a future in electoral politics.

“I wouldn’t in any way rule out the possibility of further elected office,” he said. “I’m not moving to Washington. I’m keeping my residency in Louisiana.”
