Manchin and Cortez Masto Bet on NCAA Sweet 16 Game

Gonzaga and West Virginia alums’ team face off Thursday

Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin III and Catherine Cortez Masto made a friendly bet over their alma maters facing off Thursday night in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

West Virginia, where Manchin earned his undergraduate degree, plays Gonzaga, where Cortez Masto earned her law degree, in the Sweet 16 round of the tournament.

If WVU wins, Cortez Masto will wear blue and gold once a month for the rest of 2017. If Gonzaga wins, Manchin will wear a tie from the school once a month for the rest of 2017.

When HOH talked to Manchin about WVU basketball on Tuesday, he wasn’t aware that Cortez Masto was the only alum from Gonzaga.

“I’ll have to get with Catherine. I’ll have a little bet with her,” the senator said at the time.

“I’m confident the Gonzaga Bulldogs will continue their winning streak tonight against West Virginia,” Cortez Masto said about the bet. “I welcome this bet with Senator Manchin — I am a Las Vegan, after all.”

Manchin talked some trash back.

“This Mountaineer team and Coach [Bob] Huggins have made us proud all season long,” he said. “I’m excited to be reminded of tonight’s win every time Senator Cortez Masto wears blue and gold.”

The winner will advance to the Elite Eight round and play again on Saturday to reach the Final Four.
