Speaker Paul D. Ryan on Thursday announced that he has formally invited President Donald Trump to address a joint session of Congress January 30 for a State of the Union address.

Assuming Trump accepts the invitation, it would be the president’s first official State of the Union. His speech to a joint session of Congress earlier this year is not considered a formal state of the union because presidents who are just sworn in do not deliver such speeches.

The State of the Union address give the president the opportunity to outline his legislative priorities for the year, as well as make other important statements about the status of the nation’s economy and national security.

Ryan’s letter to Trump inviting him to address Congress on January 30 noted the GOP’s current efforts to provide “historic” relief to taxpayers, grow the economy and rebuild the military, although such priorities are nothing new to presidents and congresses of any stripe. 

“The new year will bring an opportunity to take account of the progress we have made but also lay out the work that still remains to be done on behalf of the American people,” the speaker wrote.
