Gray lost a 2016 Senate bid to Rand Paul
Lexington Mayor Jim Gray is announcing Tuesday he’s running for Congress in Kentucky’s 6th District against three-term GOP Rep. Andy Barr.
Gray lost a 2016 Senate bid against GOP Sen. Rand Paul, winning 43 percent of the vote to Paul’s 57 percent. The Democrat would have been the first openly gay man to serve in the Senate — a fact that drew little interest from voters on the trail last year. Gray defeated Paul in the 6th District.
The Democratic primary in the 6th District is already crowded, with retired Marine Lt. Col. Amy McGrath getting lots of early attention for her online videos.

The first-time candidate raised more than double what Barr raised during the third quarter. During her first full quarter, McGrath raised $772,000 compared to Barr’s $300,000.
McGrath ended the period with $551,000 in the bank. Barr has $1.3 million cash on hand. Gray had $12,000 in his federal campaign account at the end of the third quarter.
