Report: Costello Not Running for Re-Election
Pennsylvania Republican changes mind after initially filing for third term
Pennsylvania Rep. Ryan A. Costello has decided against seeking re-election, despite recently filing to run for a third term, according to a report from City & State PA.
The news site reported that the Republican lawmaker met Friday with party officials, including state GOP chairman Val DiGiorgio and former Republican Rep. Jim Gerlach, whom he succeeded in 2015, and informed them he would drop out of the race before the May 15 primary.
Costello’s campaign and a spokesman for the Pennsylvania GOP did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The two-term lawmaker’s 6th District in the Philadelphia suburbs became more Democratic after the congressional lines were redrawn last month. Hillary Clinton carried the seat under its previous configuration by 1 point in 2016. But under the new map, she would have done so by 10 points. Inside Elections with Nathan L. Gonzales shifted its rating for the race from Leans Republican to Tilts Democratic.
The Philadelphia Inquirer had reported ahead of the March 20 filing deadline that Costello was considering retiring. But he ended up filing for re-election. Another Republican, lawyer Greg McCauley, also filed to run in the 6th District.
The only Democrat who filed to run was Chrissy Houlahan, an Air Force veteran and former chief operating officer of an athletic apparel company, who is considered a top recruit.
