Updated 10:35 p.m. | Women representing the Washington press corps won their third straight Congressional Women’s Softball Game on Wednesday.

The press team, known as the Bad News Babes, shut out the lawmakers, 5-0. The threat of rain lingered through the game, which was ultimately called off in the fifth inning because of a downpour.

“It was a little discouraging,” New York Republican Rep. Claudia Tenney said after the game. “I wish it didn’t rain and we could have had another couple of opportunities to maybe catch up to the news [team], but it was a great game, great charity and it’s an honor to play.”

The game, which was first played in 2009, raised about $320,000 dollars for the Young Survival Coaltion, which supports young women with breast cancer.

Jen Bendery of HuffPost opened for the Bad News Babes with two runs.

In the fifth inning, just before the game was called, Roll Call’s very own Bridget Bowman knocked one out of the park with two players on base — Abby Livingston of the Texas Tribune and Leigh Ann Caldwell of NBC News — hitting the first recorded home run in the event’s history. 

The press women celebrated their win on the field only briefly, before players quickly gathered their belongings and ducked the rain on their way to the post-game celebration and awards presentation.

Bowman was named the press team MVP, while Utah Republican Rep. Mia Love was the members’ MVP.
