On the day of the final primary election of the midterm cycle, Washington Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal announced she was launching a PAC focused on helping candidates who support Medicare For All, an idea that divided Democratic candidates.

The PAC will support both candidates and initiatives promoting universal health care. The announcement did not specify an initial investments.

In a video announcement, Jayapal said that the United States is the only industrialized nation that still doesn’t guarantee its citizens access to comprehensive health care.

“American families are hurting and public officials need to do better, because no family should be one healthcare crisis away from bankruptcy or a lifetime of paying off medical debt,” she said. “Insurance companies, drug manufacturers and special interest groups have been standing in the way of real progress for too long — it’s time we fought back. Health care cannot be a luxury that’s only available for the wealthy and well-connected — it is a human right. Now is the time for Medicare For All.”

Earlier this year Jayapal and some other progressive Democrats formed a Medicare for All Caucus to discuss the idea in Congress.
