President Donald Trump on Saturday stopped just shy of saying he believes climate change is a legitimate scientific phenomenon, a statement that likely would not sit well with his conservative base and most GOP lawmakers.

“We have different views but maybe not as different as people think. Things are happening. Things are changing,” he said aboard Air Force One in California, flanked by Gov. Jerry Brown and Gov.-elect Gavin Newsom.

Both are Democrats who believe in climate change.

Trump’s views on the issue have vacillated wildly over the years. He has called it a hoax and acknowledged changes are occurring — but insisting in October that weather patterns will eventually “switch back.”

“And I think most importantly we’re doing things about — to make it better,” he said Saturday. “We’re going to make it a lot better.”

Trump, who often describes himself as a one-man fixer for just about any problem, did not provide examples.
