New York Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, who is running for Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee chairman, is requesting the caucus delay voting on that position while he recovers from a severe bacterial infection.

The caucus is scheduled to hold its leadership elections Wednesday — and Thursday if additional time is needed to conclude the proceedings — but Maloney is not in a condition to travel to Washington.

If the caucus decides not to reschedule the DCCC vote, Maloney plans to withdraw his candidacy.

Maloney was diagnosed in late September with a persistent bacterial infection that spread to a number of his internal organs and on Sunday he was admitted to the emergency room at New York-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital after the condition worsened.

While Maloney returned home that night, he checked himself into New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City the next day, per doctors’ instructions.

He is receiving intravenous antibiotic treatments and is expected to return home before the end of the week but not able to travel to Washington this week while he continues his recovery.

“I had intended to stand for election to a leadership position this week, but life had other plans for me,” Maloney said in a statement. “I’ve always been blessed with good health, but this condition is going to require a few days of intensive treatment. With deep respect for my supporters and colleagues, I felt it was improper to continue a leadership run at this time, unless the election can be postponed until a later date.”

Three other candidates are running for DCCC chair: Illinois Rep. Cheri Bustos and Washington Reps. Suzan DelBene and Denny Heck.
