Trump to Nominate Top Army General for Joint Chiefs Chairman
Gen. Mark Milley has been Army chief of staff since 2015
President Donald Trump said Saturday he intends to nominate Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley to replace Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The commander-in-chief hinted Friday he intended to make the personnel announcement during the Army-Navy football game he will attend in Philadelphia Saturday.
“I have another one for tomorrow that I’m going to be announcing at the Army-Navy game. I can give you a little hint: It will have to do with the joint chiefs of staff and succession,” he said Friday as he left the White House.
On Saturday he opted against waiting that long, however.
I am pleased to announce my nomination of four-star General Mark Milley, Chief of Staff of the United States Army – as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, replacing General Joe Dunford, who will be retiring….

….I am thankful to both of these incredible men for their service to our Country! Date of transition to be determined.

Trump also announced Friday he will nominate George H.W. Bush-era Attorney General William Barr to return to that post and former Fox News anchor Heather Nauert, who is the State Department’s chief spokeswoman, to be UN ambassador.
Milley has been Army chief of staff since 2015. The general received his commission in 1980 and has served in command and staff positions since then, including a posting at the Pentagon. He has commanded troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
By selecting Milley for the top military post, Trump is keeping it in the hands of the ground services. The Army or Marine Corps have had their generals in that post since Oct. 1, 2011.
The last Air Force or Navy four-star to hold the Joint Chiefs chairman role was Navy Adm. Michael Mullen, who was the military’s top four-star office from October 2007-September 2011.
