Trump claims Pelosi told him House Democrats don’t want to impeach him
‘You can’t impeach somebody that’s doing a great job,’ president says
President Donald Trump is claiming that Speaker Nancy Pelosi told him during a meeting Friday on the partial government shutdown that House Democrats are not looking to impeach him.
The president alleged that Pelosi said directly to him Friday, “We’re not looking to impeach you,” and recounted his response as, “That’s good Nancy.”
Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill tweeted this account of Trump and Pelosi’s exchange on impeachment: “In his opening comments at the meeting, President Trump brought up impeachment. Speaker Pelosi made clear that today’s meeting was about re-opening government, not impeachment.”
Trump was asked during a lengthy, hastily convened press conference in the Rose Garden after the meeting with congressional leaders about comments from freshman Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan in which she said she wanted to impeach him and called him someone who engages in sexual activity with his mother.
“You can’t impeach somebody that’s doing a great job, that’s the way I view it,” Trump said.
Article II, Section 4 of the Constitution states that “The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.”
He called Tlaib’s comments a “disgrace” to her and her family.
