In their first 100 days, socialist Democrats have shown they are unable to lead

OPINION — After 100 days of accomplishing nothing but tax increases and bad headlines, the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives boldly proclaimed her socialist Democratic caucus have the 2020 elections in the bag. Her faux confidence is misplaced; the past three months for her band of socialists were disastrous.

In the first 100 days, the socialist Democrats managed to call for over $100 trillion in new spending, but are so dysfunctional, they refuse to propose a budget outlining the payment plan for their radical agenda. Ridiculously, these socialists have spent weeks continuing to attack President Donald Trump’s budget proposal. Talk about hypocrisy.

While they couldn’t develop a budget plan, House Democrats did find a way to tax Americans into oblivion, introducing a host of socialist policies that threaten America’s foundation and the values we hold dear: freedom and liberty.

Let’s start with the so-called Green New Deal, which is a $93 trillion takeover of the economy that bans everything from flatulent cows to air travel. It also calls for reconstructing every building in the United States, and provides a federal jobs guarantee for people who “choose not to work.” While this sounds like some type of socialist fantasy, the sad reality is one out of every three House Democrats co-sponsored this bill.

If that wasn’t scary enough, nearly half of the Democratic Caucus co-sponsored a bill mandating a $32 trillion government takeover of the health care system. Their plan would eliminate private insurance, make it illegal for businesses to offer health insurance to workers, destroy the current Medicare system that America’s seniors have paid into for decades, and make a trip to the doctor feel like a trip to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Of course, the most ironic part about the socialist takeover of our health care is that Democrats, who campaigned on protecting the Affordable Care Act, now want to repeal and replace.

The first 100 days of socialist rule have also revealed how extreme the Democratic Party is on abortion. Gone are the days of respectful discourse. Now the socialist Democrats openly celebrate late-term abortions up until the moment of birth.

The governor of New York recently issued an order to light up New York City’s tallest skyscraper and historical landmarks pink to celebrate this heinous act. But not to be outdone, the governor of Virginia took it one step further, publicly defending infanticide, saying a newborn baby surviving a botched abortion would be “kept comfortable” while the mother and doctor decide whether they should allow the baby to die.

To make it all worse, the socialist Democrats are blocking Republican legislation requiring medical professionals to provide newborns surviving a botched abortion lifesaving care from coming to a vote on the House floor.

Perhaps most alarming is the tolerance House Democrats have for racism and bigotry within their own caucus. Take, for example, a member from my home state of Minnesota, who has repeatedly made anti-Semitic comments. She recently accused a senior Jewish-American White House official of being a white nationalist, and to top it off, dismissively described the 9/11 terrorist attacks as “some people did some things.” Yet despite these despicable comments, her side of the aisle allows her a prominent role in conducting foreign policy.

Apparently in the mind of the socialist Democrats running the House, racism and bigotry are only an issue when it doesn’t involve one of their own.

The first 100 days have made it crystal clear that the socialist Democrats are not up to the task of leading our country. So in the next 100 days, Republicans will continue recruiting a diverse group of candidates to take back the majority. We are already making tremendous progress, thanks to the hard work of Rep. Susan Brooks, recruitment chairwoman for the National Republican Congressional Committee. Thus far, we have met with over 110 women, 50 veterans and 60 minorities considering a run for office.

Chairwoman Brooks said it best when she voiced her desire for our Republican Conference to better reflect the makeup of our country — and I couldn’t agree more.

The speaker will quickly learn that her confidence in ongoing control of the House is misguided. And that Americans prefer freedom to socialism.

Rep. Tom Emmer is the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee. He is currently in his third term representing Minnesota’s 6th District.
