Rep. Louie Gohmert has three daughters. Caroline, the middle child, is a musician who lives in California under the artist name BELLSAINT. And her latest single is called “Much Like My Father.”

“Everybody loves you / But there’s poison in the water / You get away with everything / Much like my father,” BELLSAINT begins.

Louie Gohmert represents Texas’ 1st District by bringing to Washington an unrivaled Friar Tuck haircut and a reputation for remarks and beliefs that grind against even his own Republican colleagues (sometimes), earning him national headlines even before his 2004 election to Congress.

Shortly after his election, Gohmert brought up his three daughters in a floor speech condemning U.S. aid given to a litany of foreign nations that in his view worked against U.S. interests.

“But I love my children. I love my three daughters, Katy, Caroline, and Sarah, with all my heart. They’re now — boy it’s hard to see them as grown women now — but as they were growing up as children I loved them with all my heart, but when they acted up, I wasn’t going to reward that,” Gohmert said in April 2005.

Years later he referenced a daughter living in California while mourning the death of conservative media figure Andrew Breitbart.

“But Andrew was so kind to be an encourager to my daughter in California, was always complimentary of her when we talked,” Gohmert said on the House floor in 2012. “He knew how to make a father proud.”

“[T]his song means a lot to me & is a big part of my story. ‘Much Like My Father’ available now wherever you do music,” the BELLSAINT Twitter account posted in late August.

“I don’t like to cry in public / I’d like to think I’m stronger / But the truth is I push everyone away / Much like my father,” Caroline sings in saturated tones that could be mistaken for Lana Del Rey.

The track concludes Caroline’s 2019 EP “Technicolor Dream” with a piano solo that would sap the melancholy out of a ninth-grade breakup.

“How do you make somebody love you back [3x] / How do you make somebody love you / I can’t get close, I can’t let go / What am I supposed to do with that?” she asks at the song’s crescendo.

Up until 2013, Caroline tweeted semiregular affectionate messages about her father. In a 2017 interview with LAPALME magazine, she revealed Louie’s own musical inclination.

“My dad plays acoustic guitar and he would write songs and play them for me and my two sisters,” she said. “I think he always wanted us to have jam sessions, but I was very private with that for a long time. I didn’t want anybody to really hear me play for a while.”

Through her agent, Ryan Vaughn, Caroline declined to be interviewed. Rep. Gohmert’s office did not respond to multiple requests for an interview.

Around the time BELLSAINT originally released “Much Like My Father,” debate with a publicist about how to handle the angle of Caroline’s relationship with her father ended with the decision to not make a proactive public disclosure, but to address the matter if it came up organically, Vaughn said.

Caroline loves her father but disagrees with him politically, Vaughn said. She did not want to use the conflict as a way to promote her music career, but as an artist, writing about the relationship could not be helped, he said.
