National Guard members salute the procession carrying the remains of the late Metropolitan Police Officer Terry Bennett on Independence Avenue Southwest on Monday. Bennett was struck by a car on Dec. 23, 2025, while assisting a motorist on Interstate 695 near the Third Street Tunnel and died of his injuries on Jan. 7, according to news reports.

The details of the collision and Bennett’s death in January were corrected in this report.
