The Senatorial campaign committees of both parties went south during March for fundraising events at warmer Southern resorts. Think The Breakers in Palm Beach, Fla., and Sea Island in Georgia. Hey, someone's got to raise funds — especially when both committees are in million-dollar debt. At the end of the month the Democrats had added $3 million to their cash on hand, and the Republicans had added $2 million, but neither paid down any of their outstanding bank loans. The Democrats still owe $15 million to Bank of America, and the Republicans owe $9.5 million to Wells Fargo. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee reported receipts of $5,234,289 and disbursements of $1.848.736, leaving $8,428,888 cash on hand as of March 31, with $15 million in debts outstanding. The committee received $1,271,000 from PACS and other committees. They reported $1,744,339 in unitemized contributions from those giving $200 or less, and $1,986,818 from those giving over $200. Donors giving $32,400 included Conor Bagley (student, D.C.); Kathleen Stassen Berger (professor, Bronx Community College, N.Y.); Edwin Black (president, Computer & Communications Industry Assn, D.C.); David Boies (attorney, Boies Schiller & Flexner LLP, N.Y.); Jonathan Schiller (attorney, Boies Schiller & Flexner, N.Y.); Charles Ergen (chairman, DISH Network Corp., Colo.); Tim Gill (retired, Colo.); John Henry (writer, N.Y.); and William & Weslie Janeway (he, venture banking, Warburg Pincus, N.Y.) $64,800; among several Indian tribes, and others. Some expenditures were for events at Martha's Vineyard's Harbor View Hotel & Resort (Edgartown, Mass.) $48,752; and The Breakers Palm Beach (Palm Beach, Fla.) $72,544. They also paid $40,000 for air charters; $195,800 to Bully Pulpit for Internet and website services; and $305,582 to PDR Resources of Cambridge, MA., for direct marketing services. (more…)
