Lugar Shoots Down Veep Buzz

Sen. Dick Lugar (R-Ind.) shot down any notion that he might be a possible running mate for presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) on Tuesday.

“There’s no chance of me considering running with Barack Obama,” the Indiana Republican said.

Obama references his work with Lugar and uses his likeness in a new campaign ad that focuses on foreign policy. The spot highlights the pair’s work in trying to combat nuclear proliferation.

“What I did was reach out to Sen. Dick Lugar, a Republican, to help lock down loose nuclear weapons,” Obama says in the new spot that shows a photo of the two Senators side by side.

An item in the Indianapolis Star recently speculated about the potential of Obama reaching across the aisle to choose a running mate, and named Lugar as a good possibility.
