Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and other Democratic leaders are scheduled over the next two weeks to visit the district of endangered Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick (D-Mich.), who is getting a stiff Democratic primary challenge from two opponents.

Kilpatrick’s campaign announced Friday that Pelosi and the other Democratic leaders will be coming to the Detroit area over the next two weeks. For the first time in her six terms in office, Kilpatrick is facing a major challenge from state Sen. Martha Scott and former state Rep. Mary Waters in the Aug. 5 Democratic primary.

Michigan Democrats have seen Kilpatrick’s political reputation marred by her son, Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who was charged with eight felony counts earlier in March following fallout from a whistle-blower trial. Through this scandal, in which the mayor was wrapped up in an alleged extramarital affair with his former chief of staff, and other controversies during his tenure in office, the Congresswoman has steadfastly supported her son.

Pelosi is scheduled to visit on July 25 and appear with Kilpatrick at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial and the Downriver Italian-American Hall in Wyandotte. According to a news release from Kilpatrick’s campaign, Kilpatrick will be joined at other events by House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-S.C.) and Reps. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) and Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.).

A spokesman for the campaign, Bill McConico, said none of the visiting Members including the Speaker were scheduled as of yet to do fundraising events for Kilpatrick. McConico said the Members were there just to show their support for the chairwoman of the Congressional Black Caucus.

“Fundraising is not the point of their visits,” McConico said.

“I’m honored that these distinguished Members of the Congress are taking time to come to Detroit to support me,” Kilpatrick said in a statement. “Their willingness to make this effort on my behalf speaks to their relationship we have built and the importance they place on this district.”
