Louisiana: Bloomberg Will Fete Landrieu in Big Apple

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg (I), a renowned party switcher, is opting for the Democrat, not the party switcher, in the Bayou State Senate race.

According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Bloomberg is hosting a fundraiser July 30 for two-term Sen. Mary Landrieu (D), who is fending off a challenge from state treasurer John Kennedy, a Democrat turned Republican. The $1,000-a-ticket fundraiser will take place at Bloomberg’s Upper East Side townhouse.

“He doesn’t agree with her on every issue, but she is a moderating voice in the Senate, and he appreciates the way she works across party lines,” Bloomberg spokesman Stu Loeser said. “That’s something he feels we need more of in Washington.”

Bloomberg was a lifelong Democrat before switching parties to run for mayor as a Republican in 2001. Despite the heavy Democratic lean of the city, he was twice elected mayor on the GOP line, but he became an Independent last year.
