Rep. Vern Buchanan (R), the subject of recent news reports about alleged illicit campaign contributions in the previous cycle, on Tuesday began airing his first television spot on cable and broadcast outlets.

The ads tout Buchanan’s “independent streak,” and describe him as someone who is “more public servant than politician.”

“Gas prices reached new highs. The border is still not secure. Spending out of control,” the ad begins. “And Congress does nothing, but Vern Buchanan is fighting to change that.”

The ad closes: “Vern Buchanan. Honest. Independent. Fighting for change.”

Buchanan faces a November rematch with former bank executive Christine Jennings (D), whom he defeated in the previous cycle by just 369 votes — amid since-disproved allegations of voting-equipment malfunction.
