Coburn Endorses Moran Over Tiahrt in Kansas Senate Primary

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) endorsed Kansas Rep. Jerry Moran’s (R) bid for Senate against fellow Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R).The endorsement is the first of its kind from the two House Members’ colleagues on Capitol Hill.“Jerry has been a great ally in the fight against wasteful spending and earmarks,— Coburn said. “His election to the United States Senate would be a tremendous benefit to those of us fighting against the bailouts and irresponsible spending in Washington, D.C.— Moran and Tiahrt are running for the seat being vacated by Sen. Sam Brownback (R), who has indicated he will likely run for governor in 2010. Coburn is known for his conservative politics, and his endorsement signifies that Moran wants to be seen as running to the right of Tiahrt — a move that could prove helpful in the GOP primary in 2010.Senate Democrats hoped that Health and Human Services Secretary nominee Kathleen Sebelius (D) would run for the Senate seat in 2010, until she was plucked from the governor’s mansion for a spot in President Barack Obama’s Cabinet. With Sebelius almost certainly out of the mix — her appointment has yet to be confirmed by the Senate — Democrats are unlikely to find a top-tier candidate in Kansas to face the GOP nominee.
