Reid Says Gitmo Prisoners Will Not Be Transferred to U.S.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) told reporters Tuesday that the Senate would not provide money to close the Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, detention facility without a plan for its inmates, and that displaced prisoners would not be transferred to an American prison. While Reid said the decision to close the prison is the “right one,— he said the Senate would not provide the $80 million that President Barack Obama asked for to begin the prison’s closure without a plan. Senate Democrats have backed away from adding the funds for the closure in the $96 billion war supplemental.“This is neither the time nor … the bill to do this,— Reid said. “Democrats under no circumstances will move forward without a comprehensive plan from the president. … Under no circumstances will we allow terrorists to be released into the United States.—Pressed about whether he believed prisoners should ever be transferred into an American prison, Reid said, “Not in the United States.— It was unclear whether he would support temporary transfers to U.S. facilities in order to prosecute detainees in military court.
