HOH’s One-Minute Recess: Burr’s Cheeky Campaign

Sen. Richard Burr is guilty of the written equivalent of a tush-grab, according to one home-state columnist.

Doug Clark, an editorial writer for the Greensboro News-Record wrote on Thursday about how a mailer from the North Carolina Republican’s campaign that addressed his wife by the too-familiar nickname “Peggy— offended her as much as when Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) once “pinched her backside— while she was pregnant.

[IMGCAP(1)]And while being called by a nickname might get some people’s panties in a bunch, the Burr campaign explained the matter to HOH, saying they didn’t mean to get fresh with Margaret Clark, the writer’s wife. They simply got her mixed up with a regular Burr donor by the name, who prefers the more casual “Peggy.—

Burr’s finance director Mike Fenley tells HOH he spoke to Doug Clark and apologized for the “data entry error.—

“It upset her, and I understand, I mean my name is Michael, but I go by Mike,— he says. And just as much as ticking off a columnist’s wife, he regrets wasting the campaign’s cash. “We don’t like returned mail,— he says, explaining that money spent on postage and printing could go to more essential campaign expenses.

Sounds like this is one campaign that doesn’t like to fly by the seat of its pants.

Can’t Buy Me Love. The National Republican Senatorial Committee is planning to rock out with Sir Paul McCartney on Saturday night.

The campaign committee is scheduled to host a fundraiser at the music legend’s evening concert at FedEx Field, offering donors the chance to see the former Beatles frontman alongside NRSC Chairman John Cornyn (Texas) for $1,000 per individual or $2,500 per political action committee.
