But Republicans at the time said the writing was on the wall one year earlier, when GOP candidates won gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia. Tuesday’s GOP wins in those same two states gave Republicans hope that history would repeat itself in 2010. Ohio Rep. John Boehner (center) is the only member of that GOP leadership team who is still in Congress.
