Petraeus Hearing Set for Tuesday

The Senate Armed Services Committee has scheduled a hearing for Tuesday morning to confirm Army Gen. David Petraeus as the next top commander of U.S. military forces in Afghanistan.

President Barack Obama on Wednesday appointed Petraeus to replace Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal, who was sacked as the top U.S. military official in Afghanistan after making critical comments about the Obama administration’s leadership of the war in a Rolling Stone magazine article.

McChrystal tendered his resignation, and the president accepted. Senate Armed Services Chairman Carl Levin (D-Mich.) and ranking member John McCain (R-Ariz.) have said they expect a quick and smooth confirmation hearing.
