McCain Goes Positive With Final TV Ad Before Primary

Arizona Sen. John McCain launched a TV ad on Monday that will air on network and cable channels through next week’s primary.

In the 60-second ad, titled “Vital,” the Republican lists the most important issues of the day — “the rebuilding of our economy, the security of our nation, our border, the safety of every citizen in Arizona” — and features him saying straight to camera: “I’ve proudly stood up for our state, and never backed down.”

McCain had been locked in a competitive GOP primary against former Rep. J.D. Hayworth. However, the last three public polls released showed McCain leading by at least 20 points.

There hasn’t been a new poll on the race in nearly a month, but the tone and content of the spot send the message that McCain is a politician who doesn’t have to look over his shoulder to see if anyone is gaining on him.
