Incumbent Bean Concedes Illinois House Race

Illinois Rep. Melissa Bean (D) conceded to Republican Joe Walsh on Tuesday after the three counties in the 8th district counted the final absentee and provisional ballots from the Nov. 2 election. The final count found Bean trailing by 291 votes.
Both candidates were in Washington, D.C., for freshman orientation, and Bean’s campaign said she returned to Illinois and then called Walsh to congratulate him. She will hold a news conference in Schaumburg on Wednesday morning to discuss the results.
Bean has been a perennial target since she knocked off longtime Republican Rep. Phil Crane in 2004. In 2010, though, national Republicans backed away from the race after Walsh, a tea party activist, won the six-way primary in February. Walsh has pledged to serve no more than three terms.
Six House races, all involving Democratic incumbents, remain undecided.
