Heard on the Hill: Pingree Angry With Google Maps Mistake

It’s not just Rick Santorum. York, Maine, also has a Google problem.

It may be a delightful coastal town, but Google — and its users — just can’t seem to find York. On Google Maps, the town is placed 26 miles north and far inland from its actual location, and Rep. Chellie Pingree has had enough.

The Maine Democrat stepped up for the out-of-place town in a strongly worded letter to Google CEO Larry Page, telling him to fix the rather embarrassing mistake.

“We all know where York is, but unfortunately Google doesn’t,” Pingree wrote.

It’s not just a psychological wound, though — the town’s suffered from a drop in tourism and business, Pingree noted.

“This problem has a real economic impact for businesses in the area,” she wrote. “I understand that online booking for some inns in York have fallen significantly because of this situation, at a time when businesses are just gearing up for the tourist season.”
