Frerichs Decides Not to Run in Illinois 13th District
Illinois state Sen. Mike Frerichs (D) has decided against running for Congress in the redrawn 13th district, leaving Democrats still in recruitment mode for the newly competitive downstate seat.
The state’s new Congressional map, which is awaiting Gov. Pat Quinn’s (D) signature, makes drastic changes to many of the state’s House districts, including redrawing the central 13th district to make it much more competitive. The district now leans only slightly Republican.
The most likely Republican to run in that district is Rep. Timothy Johnson; however, a spokesman for the Congressman told Roll Call that nothing is final.
“He’s considering running in the new 13th, but all options are still open,” Johnson spokesman Phil Bloomer said. “Our governor hasn’t signed the bill finalizing the districts, and there is a lawsuit pending.”
