Giffords to Visit Tucson

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords will return to Tucson this weekend for the first time since she was shot in January.

According to the Arizona Democrat’s office, it will be a brief, private visit with no public events. Giffords will travel Friday by private plane with her husband, Mark Kelly, and one of his daughters. They will spend Father’s Day weekend with her family in Tucson. Giffords has “frequently” expressed a desire to return home over the past five months, according to a press release.

“We’ve been dreaming of this trip for some time,” Kelly said in a statement. “Gabby misses Tucson very much and her doctors have said that returning to her hometown could play an important role in her recovery. It is sure to be very emotional. For this reason, I hope the media understands our need for privacy.”

Giffords was released Wednesday from her Houston rehabilitation center, where she had stayed since being flown from Tucson on Jan. 21, two weeks following the attack. She will continue receiving outpatient care at the center while staying at Kelly’s home in nearby League City, Texas.
