Rep. Jay Inslee’s (D) announcement for Washington state governor Monday has opened the door for pent-up ambition that’s been brewing in his suburban Seattle district. 

Two more Democrats announced Monday they are running for the 1st district seat Inslee is vacating. They came as Inslee was set to make his gubernatorial campaign official Monday at a Seattle event scheduled for noon, Eastern time.

State Rep. Roger Goodman (D) filed Monday to run for the seat, announcing the move in an early morning press release. Goodman filed in January to run in the neighboring 8th district, rather than in his home district. He said in a statement that call was “out of respect for my Democratic friend and colleague … who had been considering a run for Governor but had not yet decided.”

Also announcing Monday morning was businessman and activist Darshan Rauniyar, a Nepal native and active participant in the local party. Rauniyar is a precinct committee officer and has served on the 1st district party executive committee and the Snohomish County party executive committee.

Former state Rep. Laura Ruderman announced her campaign earlier this month, and state Rep. Marko Liias announced an exploratory committee in May.

The district leans strongly Democratic, but the district will be altered with the state adding a 10th district in reapportionment. The state’s five-member redistricting commission must complete the new map by the end of the year.
