For the past three years, H Street has been covered in construction signs.

Thursday night, the cones and barricades will be replaced by residents in search of art and food at ARTventures on H.

“This is an area that has been covered up by barricades and cones,” said Julia Christian, executive director of CHAMPS, the Capitol Hill chamber of commerce. “The sense of relief is palpable.”

The chamber started ARTventures to help boost the area while it was torn up to add a streetcar line.

The first ARTventures on H attracted 1,500 people last June with 11 stops on an art walk and eight restaurants featured on a dining tour.

This year’s event, with 19 art walk stops and 20 restaurants, is expected to attract even more participants.

“The entire scope of the event is so much bigger,” Christian said. “This is definitely going to be the best one we’ve done so far.”

Events include traditional art such as photography and more unconventional forms of expression such as “yarn bombing,” a cross between knitting and graffiti. Participants will knit a sweater around a tree in order to “tag” it, for example.

Another highlight is the garage sale at H Street’s Little Miss Whiskey’s Golden Dollar, which will feature odds and ends collected and created by the staff. Bluegrass band By and By will play at the intersection of H Street and Maryland Avenue.

The art walk will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m., while the dining tour will be from 7 to 9:30 p.m.
