‘Modern Family’ Star’s Beau Still Eyeing Senate

Businessman Nick Loeb is “still seriously considering” running for Senate in Florida, he told Roll Call on Tuesday. Noting that he thought the field was still open and he could raise enough money to be competitive, the boyfriend of “Modern Family” star Sofia Vergara said he would make the call on a run by next month.

“I’d like to make a decision when she’s [in Florida] with me,” he said, referring to his Emmy-nominated girlfriend. “We’ll probably be in Florida together in November.”

Loeb, a potential self-funder, said a serious candidate would need to raise $5 million to be competitive in the GOP primary.

The current Republicans looking to take on two-term Sen. Bill Nelson are former state House Majority Leader Adam Hasner, former Sen. George LeMieux, former Ruth’s Chris CEO Craig Miller and retired Army Col. Mike McCalister. Hasner and LeMieux are considered the frontrunners. Neither candidate’s third-quarter fundraising totals were available Tuesday.

Nelson raised slightly less than $2 million and had $7.5 million in cash on hand at the end of September, his campaign said.

Loeb’s earlier political experience was an aborted campaign for state Senate in 2009. He dropped out of the race to deal with a divorce.

Loeb told Roll Call in July that he considers himself a Republican in the style of Theodore Roosevelt, conservative on some issues and moderate on others, such as the environment.

Establishment Republicans in the Sunshine State don’t see Loeb as a serious potential candidate.
