Texas Railroad Commission Chairman Elizabeth Ames Jones is dropping out of the U.S. Senate race in order to run for a seat in the state Senate, according to the Texas Tribune.

Jones was the lone notable female in the race to succeed retiring Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R). Although she won her current office in a statewide election, she has struggled to keep up with her opponents for the Republican nomination.

She raised just less than $250,000 in the third quarter, a fraction of what Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, former Solicitor General Ted Cruz and former Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert banked. She did, however, outraise the highest-profile Democrat in the race, retired Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez.

Jones had been expected to do well in her native San Antonio and South Texas, but she had yet to become a threat in other regions of the state.

Jones has previously served in the Legislative branch. She was a Member of the Texas House of Representatives from 2001 to 2005.
