Heard on the Hill: The Coburn Beard Is Back

A sure sign that the colder months are here: Sen. Tom Coburn’s beard is back! And so is its Twitter handle.

After a months-long hiatus, @TomCoburnsBeard came out of hibernation Monday with this declaration: “it’s a bit nippy outside, i’m just doing my part to keep tom warm.”

Amen, tweeting facial hair, amen.

This statement comes just one day after the Oklahoma Republican debuted the early stages of his beard on “Fox News Sunday.” Presumably, the good doctor was appearing on the political talk show to give his take on GOP presidential hopeful and former Speaker Newt Gingrich’s chances on becoming the GOP’s presidential nominee. Coburn gave his opinion on Gingrich with a resounding meh.

But it was the stubbly winter beard in its infancy, a few days’ growth under the television lights’ glow, that provided the most interesting aspect of Coburn’s appearance on Fox.

And on Monday, Coburn’s beard tweet-confirmed it was back: “last week the world received an early christmas present, a peppered patchy blanket on tom’s face.”

Coburn’s growing facial hair is, indeed, the gift that keeps on giving.

As much as everyone loves this annual holiday tradition, HOH was disappointed that Coburn’s annual beard would bypass the goatee/Van Dyke stage this year and head straight for its fullest expression.

In 2010, Coburn spent the better part of November cultivating the partial beard before giving it over to the full-face beard.
