Every week, HOH gets to know a Member of Congress better through a series of five fun questions. This week, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) talks about Jell-O molds and one of her famous relatives.

Q: Fondest childhood memory?

A: It is probably around pets that I had while I was growing up. I was always an animal lover. I had two dogs, one cat, chicken, parakeet, assorted fish, turtles.

Q: How did you hurt your arm and who has signed your cast?

A: My broken wrist is the result of a small fall I took in the Capitol the other week. Though I went to the hospital briefly, I was back at work the next day and am doing fine. President [Barack] Obama is the only person who’s signed it so far. [The president inked his signature on the boo-boo last Monday at a White House Christmas party, as noted by HOH.]

Q: Is it true that you are a descendant of Pocahontas?

A: Yes, on my mother’s side. I am a direct descendant of Pocahontas. My great-grandmother traced it back.

Q: Which holiday season is your favorite and why?

A: Favorite holiday season? Probably Christmas season because there is an appreciation for family and good fellowship that people feel during this holiday season. [It’s] friendlier, generous and [you] think more about other people.

Q: Is there a special dish you make during that season?

A: Turkey, but also during Christmas, there is something that I don’t make any other time of year. It is called Pacific Lime Mold. It’s not mold, of course. It’s a gelatin that has whipped cream, Jell-O, nuts, pineapple — and lots of calories, of course.
