Mitt Romney’s campaign says that he supports a Senate Republican effort to allow employers to opt out of paying for insurance coverage they find morally objectionable.

Earlier today, however, the former Massachusetts governor had said he did not support the proposal.

In an interview with Ohio News Network, Romney said he did not support the proposed amendment by Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.).

He added that “the idea of presidential candidates getting into questions about contraception between a man and a woman, husband and wife, I’m not going there.”

In a statement, campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said the question was poorly worded.

“Governor Romney supports the Blunt bill because he believes in a conscience exemption in health care for religious institutions and people of faith,” she said.

The Senate will vote Thursday on Blunt’s proposal, which is being put forward as an amendment to a transportation bill.
