Nebraska: Jon Bruning Goes on the Air Against Bob Kerrey

Welcome home, former Sen. Bob Kerrey.

Only two days after the Nebraska Democrat changed his mind and jumped back into the state’s Senate race, state Attorney General and GOP frontrunner Jon Bruning is welcoming him into the race with a new ad slamming Kerrey for his New York City residency.

The New York City line of attack has been widely anticipated, and Republicans used it against Kerrey while he was weighing his run. The ad describes the two candidates as “far apart on the issues as Nebraska and New York City,” while overlaying images of the New York City skyline.

The narrator describes Kerrey as a “New York liberal” and highlights votes he took during his previous time in the Senate in the 1990s.

It also includes a photo of Kerrey linking him with retiring Sen. Ben Nelson (D).

The initial ad buy is $70,000. That may not be a lot in many states, but in Nebraska, it’s a sizable sum.

And while the Bruning ad looks to the general election, he still has to beat state Treasurer Don Stenberg in the GOP primary. Stenberg has had the support of outside conservative groups. State Sen. Deb Fischer is also running for the Republican nod.

In light of Kerrey’s entrance into the race, Roll Call Politics recently changed its rating of this race to Leans Republican.
